Important Information – Multi Factor Authentication (MFA) Rollout
To help protect user accounts, the Trust has used Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) since 2020.
What is MFA?
Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) is an authentication method that requires a user to provide two or more forms of authentication to gain access to a resource such as an application or online account.
So in a nutshell, MFA adds an extra layer of security in the ever increasing battle to combat hackers.
What does this mean for you:
Already Registered for MFA
If you are already registered for MFA then you will not need to re-register, however you will need to complete the 2-step verification process each time you sign into any Office 365 application (Email, Teams, Word, Excel etc.) and online MKUH websites, via a desktop\mobile app or Office.com via a web browser from a non MKUH PC. You will continue to use your usual Office 365 username and password.
Not Registered for MFA
Your Microsoft Office 365 account (normally in the format firstname.lastname@mkuh.nhs.uk) will be enabled for MFA on your deployment date (you will receive this in an email)
In readiness for your deployment it is advisable to visit the following webpage before your deployment date to pre-register for MFA.
https://aka.ms/MFAsetup
Simply click on the + Add Method button and follow the onscreen instructions.
If you do not pre-register prior to your deployment date you will be required to register for MFA when you next attempt to sign in via a web browser or desktop\mobile app to access Email, Teams, Word, Excel or any other Microsoft Office product.
We strongly recommend to pre-register for MFA as soon as possible when on the MKUH network
To register for MFA, you will need to set up a secondary sign-in method which can include validation via an app on your mobile device , a text message containing a security code or an email to an external email address. The recommended method is to use the mobile app. You will continue to use your usual Office 365 username and password.
Please note - You will only receive an MFA prompt when you are not working on a MKUH device. If you are working remotely with a Laptop, you may receive a prompt.
You will not be able to access Email, Teams, Word, Excel, or any other Microsoft Office product. via a web browser or desktop\mobile app from a Non MKUH device until you have registered for MFA and completed the two-step verification process.
If you need additional assistance in the first instance, please refer to the Microsoft MFA Article or the guides attached to this article.
If you still have issues please reply directly to the deployment email you receive detailing the issues you have.
Best wishes
