EDM Viewer in eCARE
This new functionality has been added to eCARE to enable clinicians to view records in EDM without having to switch between two different systems.
EDM holds parts of a patient’s historical record and, until recently, was the system used to store appointment letters, meaning staff frequently have to switch between the system and eCARE for a full patient history. This change will save staff, on average, 30 seconds time per patient record which might not seem much on its own but adds up to hours saved each month.
Below you can find a screenshot of what the view looks like – if you have trouble using this view, please contact the IT Service desk via ext 87000 (if urgent) or at Support : MKUH.IT Service Desk (freshservice.com) (if non-urgent).
If you come across any miss-filed documents when accessing EDM from eCARE, please report these by either sending an email to medicalrecords.teamleaders@mkuh.nhs.uk or logging into EDM separately and using the normal functionality.
Alerts that are normally available in EDM will not be visible in the view from eCARE, please access EDM separately to see these alerts.

FAQs
- The tab has been added at the bottom-left of the patient record – smaller screens may not see this without scrolling down the toolbar
- The ‘eCARE part’ of the way it works is very simple, it uses the MRN of the record that you are in to open the corresponding record in EDM
- All functionality in the EDM view in eCARE is read-only
- Only the icons that are visible in the viewer now will be visible, none of the other icons that are in EDM normally will be made available in this view
- The ‘user account’ that EDM is seeing is a ‘service account’
- When you move to another patient record in eCARE, the next time you open up the EDM tab it will open up the new patient’s record in EDM
-
This functionality relies upon:
- Network connectivity between eCARE and the EDM servers (including Windows Firewall config)
- eCARE being able to translate the URL to IP addresses (there is a ‘host file’ on the eCARE citrix servers that holds this information)
- The service account not being locked etc. – 3rd line will know what the service account is
- The EDM main web (IIS) server working
- If EDM is down, then the EDM viewer will be down
