Window Updates – Why they matter

It’s easy to think that keeping systems secure is just the responsibility of the IT Department — but keeping devices up to date is something we all play a part in.

Windows updates include important fixes that help keep your device secure and running properly. Without these updates, your device can become more vulnerable and may not work as expected.

On average, we block around 200 cyberattacks every day, but we all need to stay alert and do our part to stay ahead of the game.

💡 What you need to know

Do not interrupt updates
Once an update has started, do not turn off your device or force a restart. Some updates may appear to pause, show a black screen, or remain on the same screen for a while. This does not necessarily mean the update has stopped.
Interrupting an update can cause problems with your device and, in some cases, may require IT intervention to recover it. If you are concerned that an update has become stuck, please contact the IT Service Desk before switching the device off.
Some updates take time
Larger updates can take longer to install, particularly feature or security updates. While this can be inconvenient, allowing updates to complete helps keep your device secure, reliable and supported. Please allow enough time for updates to finish if prompted before shutting down or restarting.
Multiple restarts may occasionally be required
It is not unusual for Windows to require more than one restart before all updates are fully installed. This can happen when updates are applied in stages or when additional updates become available after an initial restart. While this can be frustrating, allowing all requested restarts helps ensure your device remains secure and supported.
What can happen if updates are missed?
Devices that fall behind on updates may become slower, experience software issues, or be more vulnerable to cyber security threats. In some cases, access to Trust systems may be affected until updates have been applied.

✅ What you can do to help

Switch on infrequently used machines at least once a month and leave them running for a day or so, to allow updates to install.
Look out for update notifications Windows will often display a notification or update icon in the taskbar when updates are available or a restart is required. If you see these prompts, please restart your device when convenient to allow updates to complete.
Bring your Trust laptop onsite regularly and connect it to the network (ideally with a cable) to receive updates.
Keep mobile devices up to date by installing iOS or Android updates when prompted.
