Retention of NHS smartcards moving between organisations

When NHS Smartcard users leave an organisation, they should retain their physical smartcard, unless they are leaving the NHS / Healthcare profession.

By asking users to retain their smartcards when moving to a new health and care organisation, together we can save the NHS money and save colleagues time when it comes to registering at the new organisation. It is estimated that this saving could be over £50,000 a year plus hours of your time per month.

Please make sure to ask colleagues that are leaving your organisation where they are moving to, and where relevant encourage them to take their smartcard to the new organisation.
