Software Installs - Do's and Don'ts

At MKUH, we use Microsoft Intune to centrally manage and deliver the software to our devices. Intune allows us to remotely install applications, push updates, and enforce security policies across all company devices—without needing to physically access them. This ensures consistency, reduces setup time, and helps protect our data.
Intune works in the background on a schedule to keep things running smoothly and avoid interruptions. This helps ensure software installs safely, efficiently, and without slowing down your device while you work.
The first step is to remove the old version and then install the newer version, so there may be a small window of time, where the device has no application on it. If this happens to you, please be patient and read this article to understand the process.
It's important to not interrupt the install, as this can delay things even further.
✅What TO DO When Waiting for software to Install
1.Use Company Portal App
- Search for the Company Portal app in the search bar, and check if the software is listed and whether installation is pending or failed.
- Some apps may allow manual installation from here.
2.Manually run an Intune Sync
- From Company Portal, click on Settings ⚙️
-
Click Sync to manually initiate an Intune sync, only do this once.
📢Note: This does not guarantee immediate software install, but it can help trigger pending policies.
3.Ensure Network Stability
- Stay connected to a reliable, high-speed network (preferably wired or strong Wi-Fi).
- Avoid switching networks mid-process.
4.Leave the Device Powered On and Awake
- Don’t shut down or sleep the machine—Intune needs the device online and active to complete installations.
5.Allow Adequate Time
- App delivery can take 15 to 60+ minutes, depending on scheduling, device sync interval, and network speed.
6.Check Admin Portal for Status (IT Staff Only)
- If you're IT, use Microsoft Intune Admin Center > Devices > [Device] > Managed Apps to check app status or failures.
❌What NOT TO DO While Waiting
1.Don’t Keep Hitting Sync Over and Over
- Repeated syncs won't speed things up and can cause confusion or throttling.
2.Don’t Restart the Device Prematurely
- Avoid restarting unless prompted by the Company Portal or the app installation itself.
3.Avoid Logging Out or Switching Users
- Some apps need to run under the user context—stay logged in if possible.
4.Don’t Remove Device or Re-Enroll Mid-Process (IT Staff Only)
Removing your Intune account, un-enrolling, or changing device groups during install can break the process.
